The gearbox is the drive carrier – it makes the engine revs optimal, despite the different driving speed and loads. Safe operation of the engine is possible only if the transmission is in proper condition. So if you want to prevent gearbox repair from becoming your problem, react in advance.
Prevention is better than cure
One of the most common reasons for gearbox wear is, among other things, changing gears too quickly – in this situation, the gears hit each other with great force, instead of fitting perfectly into each other. Equally common is driving in gear that is not suitable for travel speed and engine load – thus it is easy to overload and thus wear out the axles more quickly.
Another reason is driving with too little oil or driving with used oil. Therefore, it is worth remembering not only to check the oil level in the gearbox often, but also to regularly change it. Even if you have a model in whose manual it is not recommended to change the oil, in practice after driving about 60000 – 70000 km it is worth extending the life of the transmission in this way.
In addition to regularly checking the transmission oil and avoiding aggressive driving, it is worth checking the housing and chassis once in a while for possible leaks – this will allow for more efficient gasket replacement, which you usually have a problem with in this case. Thanks to this, the fault will not contribute to more serious failures.
Transmission replacement and regeneration
If prevention fails, you are left with two options: overhaul the gearbox or replace the gearbox. The first problems with the transmission can begin after driving 150 – 200 thousand. km and usually relate to minor damage. Replacing bearings, gears and synchronizers are just examples of potential repairs to be made. However, the final cost is influenced not only by the price of the replaced part, but also by the materials necessary to replace it and the type, model and age of the vehicle.
For example, the cost of bearings to be replaced ranges from 400 to 1000 PLN. In turn, their replacement by a mechanic along with the replacement of sealants reaches price ranges in thousands – such a procedure can cost up to PLN 2500.
The multitude of variables makes it impossible to clearly indicate how expensive it will be to repair the gearbox. The price of renovation may also exceed the replacement of this segment, so the right alternative is to replace the gearbox. When buying a used transmission, we must pay attention to the color and density of the transmission oil – if we find metal filings in it or there will be little of it, it is best to refrain from buying. The cost of the regenerated component oscillates around PLN 1500. To this amount should also be added the cost of replacing the transmission, which can range from 300 to 1000 PLN.
The third option – regeneration of the gearbox
